TRAIN TO BE A PATIENT SAFETY ADVOCATE

,

How can a patient possibly know all the problems that can occur in a hospital?

Patient Safety and communications educator, Leslie Farrington, MD, will discuss five problems associated with patient harm known as F.I.L.M.S., Falls, Infections, Literacy, Medication and Surgery, at a workshop on Friday, August 17 from 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM in Freeport, New York. These types of workshops are available to your organization, as well, and you are welcome to contact PULSE to discuss available options.
This particular program, offered since 2006 on Long Island, focuses on the role of the family or friend of the patient helping when someone is ill, injured or elderly and what the patient’s community can do to help ensure the best outcomes.
Family Centered Patient Advocacy Training is based on a training manual developed by PULSE of NY, and includes contributions by over a dozen national experts such as Mark Graber MD, Chief, Medical Service at the Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Northport LI. Dr. Graber specializes in diagnostic errors, and encourages families to help the patient be a good historian and gather past medical information.
Matthew Rice, MD, JD, of Northwest Emergency Physicians of TEAMHealth, Federal Way, Washington State. encourages the advocate to keep handy a list of medical problems and medications in preparation for the emergency room, and Michael Cohen, R.Ph., M.S., ScD, President Institute for Safe Medication Practices, suggests the advocate can alert the pharmacist about the patient’s allergies or past reactions to medications.
Dr. Farrington, board member of PULSE of NY (Wantagh NY), a grassroots patient safety organization, teaches patient safety workshops with Ilene Corina, President of PULSE of NY, at the South Nassau Unitarian Universalist Congregation, Freeport LI NY.
Preregistration for the August 17, workshop is required by August 10, 2012. Groups are intentionally kept small to facilitate interactive learning, so register early. For more information contact (516) 579-4711
