An Introduction

,

I have been contemplating writing an article for TimetoPlay.com for quite some time now. I always felt it could be something valuable for me to do and for others to see. There are many things which I have something to say about, and I am hoping this column will provide me with a venue where I may express some of them. It took me a while to figure out what I would want to write about or at least to focus on and I am pretty sure I finally have it.

First off, let me introduce myself. My name is Gregory Guma, I am Doreen’s son and I am a 21 year old who lives in New York City. I go to Baruch College where I Major in Psychology and Philosophy, and Minor in Art. I have a high need for cognition (to put it simply I am always thinking) and I like to imagine that I am an intelligent and creative individual. I am fascinated by people, Philosophy, art, science, history and pretty much everything else.

Over time and with my experiences, I have come to realize that there are some things which are not discussed enough amongst people in our society. For example: different matters of mental health and treatment along with more lofty things which one would speak of in a Philosophical sense. My intention with this column is to discuss some of the pressing issues in the world of personal wellbeing in an attempt to raise awareness and ease various forms of stigma associated with the pursuit of psychological health. I also intend to discuss matters of philosophical importance, as well as current events, or whatever else I find to be pertinent, important, and valid.

Now, it is important to realize that I am not a professional. None of my articles should be taken as professional advice or as treatment options, medical or otherwise. Instead, think of them as a beginning to a dialogue whose resolution is improvement and progression in everyday life. I have learned a lot in my studies thus far, from talking to different people and experiencing different things. I feel that this is precisely where the value of my articles come from, I am not a professional, I am a student, and instead of having seen something for thirty years, I am looking upon these issues with fresh eyes. Truly, these articles are an extension of my journey to learn about people and how to improve their lives, but in a setting where others can join me and start a discussion. It is my hope that this discussion will lead to more questions and answers which will be beneficial to anyone who decides to become a participant. I also hope to inspire positive social reactions which lead to readers helping themselves and others. For, I cannot imagine what could be better than inspiring pro-social behavior amongst any group of people large or small, this was a belief my mother instilled upon me, the reason why she created this site, and one of my core values which I try to live up to every day.
